The Lisburn based Maryland Wheelers Cycling Club in conjunction with Cycling Ulster and the McCall family have launched the "David McCall Cycling Foundation" which is designed to support cycling in Ulster and as a fitting tribute to the great contribution made to cycling by David McCall in his lifetime.

David McCall a native of Lisburn in County Antrim was tragically killed on a club cycle race near Nutts corneron 12 August 2008. He was nicknamed 'Morale' for his up beat outlook on life and enthusiasm for cycling, he was a huge character in the sport and will be dearly missed.

He represented Ireland at International level on numerous occasions between 1985 and 1990 and competed in the Commonwealth Games on three occasions for Northern Ireland - 1986, 1990 and 1998.

Over a period of 18 years he ammassed 32 Irish and Ulster Championship medals at road disciplines and held a top category elite licence for 22 consecutive years until he joined the veteran ranks in 2002.

Ironically, David was killed whilst preparing for the All Ireland RR Championships which took place a few weeks later. When he retired from International competition, Davy continued to work on behalf of the sport. He was secretary of Cycling Ulster and long term serving member of the executive. He did much to bring about the unification of the sport in Ireland and in more recent years he served as a commissaire and top level coach.

Objectives of foundation

Maryland Wheelers would like to see the Foundation supporting cycling in Ulster by providing financial and other support to individuals and teams who are making a real contribution to the development of cycling particularly at the grass roots level:

• For Cyclists of all ages; particularly those who receive little or no financial support from other sources
• For those who support cyclists
• For those who help to improve the safety of road racing in particular

The types of events that could be supported by the foundation include:
• Youth Training Camps
• Team Events for Veterans
• More recognition for motorcycle marshals

Contibutions to the Foundation are now sought from all those who would like to contribute to the cycling legacy of David McCall and help support cycling in Ulster.

Please send contributions to;

Or call personally at any of the twenty one Abbey branches in Northern Ireland

Maryland Wheelers and the family of David McCall would like to thank all those who make a contribution to or otherwise support the "David McCall Cycling Foundation".
