2011 No.13
1st again for Ballymoney Cycling
Club.
Ballymoney Cycling Club's riders each week that passes are getting stronger and their boundless energy is
apparent in their
representing the town and borough all over the island of Ireland. Leisure riders are taking part in charity
events supporting
worthy causes and raising money to help their research. The racing section of BCC are in action in Wicklow,
the Sperrins, Donegal, Newry and as far down as Wexford in Gorey in the famous stage race held there at Easter.
Every week we try to let the readers know what we are doing and the challenges that we get involved in.
Ballymoney Cycling Club want to thank their friends and supporters who turn out help promote and support us
every week.
James and Rebecca Carlin in M.T.B action
The mountain bike XT series was again held at Davagh forest near Cookstown. This event was
organised by Carn Wheelers and attracted 300+ riders from as far away as Cork. The local club
in their attempt to make sure the success of this challenge, used wheel barrows to get stones put down to make
the
paths and the forest floor passable for the riders young and old. Hard work made sure that the competitors
safety was
taken care of and it was now up to them to make sure there was good racing for all.
Ballymoney Cycling Club's school kids, James and Rebecca Carlin were amongst the others as they manoeuvred
their tiny mountain bikes around the well prepared tracks.
This is a message to other parents who have young active children, James and Rebecca's Dad Niall makes sure
that he is on hand to get both of them to these type of events. Niall sends out a request to other parents to
come along and in this safe and controlled environment , come along and let them get some "Steam off!" It beats
the computer games and is good for everyone's health.
Ballymoney Cycling Club will be holding an open and registration evening, this is an opportunity for parents
and kids to come along and meet the people who are putting in place these types of events.
Watch out for posters and adverts in the local newspapers and in the Joey Dunlop centre!
BCC first Road Race at Bendooragh.
27 riders met at Bendooragh to take part in Ballymoney Cycling Club's 22 mile road race, on the fast Balnamore,
Glenstall circuit.
Joan Trengove had one of her school girl riders in action, Joan who looks after Woman's and youth development
at the club is assembling a group of very talented young woman, and introducing them carefully into the sport.
Aoife Cameron Mitchell an under 14 schoolgirl set off with Jack Owens and David McConaghie in the first group.
The organiser and race secretary Aaron Dickie, had set out a plan to help the slower and less experienced
riders get a fair advantage over the faster scratch riders like Jason Taggart and 2011 Carn Wheelers Classic
winner Steven McAllister and local fast finisher Jason Henry. The gap from front to back was 9 minutes and it
was clear that the front groups would enjoy early season success. Ballymoney Cycling Club encourage and welcome
members of other local clubs to take part in their races. This is part of promoting the sport in the area, Bann
Wheelers, Carn Wheelers, Roe Valley and Bann Valley are clubs who are very active in their support, and it is
very much appreciated by BCC.
With the front two groups coming together, Bann Valley rider Brian Bonnar took the famous BCC chequered flag
from talented Bann Wheeler Davy Park.
Schoolboy Robbie McElderry was 3rd and Ballymoney CC's fast improving rider Oliver Bateson was 4th.

Wayne Stevens wins the Stroan Circuit Road Race!
Again Ballymoney Cycling Club have uncovered another winning cyclist in the "Talented" Wayne Stevens,
Wayne is a fantastic example to everyone struggling to loose weight, he has stripped down a massive
7 stone and is now at a fighting weight of 13 stones and getting less.
Any one really serious about weight loss should have a word with Wayne. His bright, happy and infectious
personality has hit the local cycling fraternity with a bang.
As some of the wiser cycling heads have already noticed, it is ok to talk, but positive action like winning
races are the best way to set your stall out and show the others what you intend to do. Wayne is a former
British schoolboy and junior champion, and after health issues he is back to really enjoy the competitive sport
of cycling.
Stranocum was his first scalp, and he set about taking the race to his competitors as they tackled the sticky
Stroan circuit 5 times.
Again Ballymoney CC events are proving popular and are attracting riders from other local clubs. This seems due
to the considered and planned circuits and distances set out by race secretary Aaron Dickie, Aaron has set in
place a series of races and challenges that will challenge everyone.
With four of the five laps completed Wayne was watching his competition, Carn Wheeler A4 race winner from Bann
Wheelers James Thompson and his fast improving son Michael were keeping an eye on what was going on. Fortune
favours the brave and the plan unfolded as Wayne launched a blistering attack on the uphill ramp of the Stroan,
riders like Philip McKeown and young talent Ryan Fenton tried to get the wheel of the man from the "Leck" but
he was determined to win and that is what happened as he put his head down and enjoyed the applause at the
finish, taking a classy lone victory.
The strength in depth that Ballymoney CC has comes from riders like Hugh McConaghie and Neville Patton who can
get into the results when they get a chance, well done lads. Other good performances by Aaron Swan and Craig
Crawford, these two schoolboys are what we at Ballymoney must encourage other young riders to aspire too.

Gorey 3 Day Stage race.
The Irish Road Club have been promoting this top 3 day event for well over 50 years, with Ballymoney CC old
boys Eddie McKinney and Maurice McAllister both riding the race in the 70's and early 80's.
Young guns and top local riders Bryan McKinney and Steven McAllister along with former top rider Eddie McKinney
set off at Easter to take part along with 180 others from Ireland, Belgium and Holland. Bryan and Stevie in the
saddle and Eddie in the service car. Setting out from Blessington and heading south towards Gorey in Co.
Wexford the riders faced the first stage of 65 miles, the next day a 4 mile TT and then a circuit road stage of
50 miles and the final day back to Blessington of 65miles.
Here is a compact report of their progress.
Three days racing - 25mph average speed for 175
miles, both lads punctured on stage 3, Bryan in the first lap and Stevie after winning the KOH sprint in
the second lap. Both times the bunch speed was in excess of 30mph.
Both riders were told by the commissaires that they could start the next day but they did not have to ride the
4th and final lap. They were given a 60 minute time penalty to cover this....This is the proper way to
ensure both lads who had travelled so far could finish the event.
Before they punctured Bryan was 12th overall at 1 minute 13secs and Stevie 29th at 1minute 35secs.
In real time with the punctures both riders would only have been 10-15mins down overall.... But punctures
happen and the commissaires had to make sure a BCC Team time trial was not launched on the final stage and the
10-15 minutes brought back!!!!
To give everyone an idea of the quality of the performances both lads put in.... Bryan rode 4 miles in 7mins
and 30secs average speed of 32mph, Stevie 4 miles in 7mins and 52 seconds average speed
31mph.......!
In an attempt to salvage a result, both of the
BCC lads went all out for a final stage win, Bryan attacking and going for a long run to the line but being
caught only to see his team mate Stevie taking what he thought was the stage win only to be told 5km to go.
Great to see them both travelling to get at the opposition.
Professional Cyclist Ronan McLaughlin
chooses Ballymoney race.

the social websites and in the cycling forums how Ballymoney Cycling Club put riders safety as their
top priority with road junctions and roundabouts covered with the club's leisure and race members out in force,
making this event a standard other clubs will have to follow.
Ballymoney Cycling Club are actively encouraging
young cyclists to get involved in this challenging sport, and woman's and youth development Officer Joan
Trengove brought along another bright prospect, an under 14 school girl Ellen McAree, Ellen gave an air
of positiveness and happiness to the race with her smiles and waves along the
route.
With Cycling Ulster's chairman and secretary Tommy
and Marian Lamb looking after the event and Official CU timekeeper Billy Smith getting the riders times
recorded.

2011 No.12
Health and Leisure with Ballymoney Cycling
Club
With Ballymoney Cycling Club now having double the members from last year and the
membership growing to 40 plus, the growth and the popularity is down to the successful
Health and Leisure section of BCC.
This growth and interest in the Ballymoney borough is down to the efforts of people in Ballymoney CC, like
leisure secretary Chris Frew, club secretary Charlie Dickson, youth and woman's promotion officer Joan
Trengove.
Apart from their support of worthy cause events like Meningitis, Causeway Search and Rescue, Children's
Heartbeat Trust, Marie Currie, Hospice, Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children. They have travelled from
Ballymoney and district to Armagh, Larne, Donegal, Belfast and recently to Derry for the Hospice Ride, this was
completed by Jonny Jones and Shirley Park completing a distance of 50 miles.
Portugal, 2011 with BCC Health and Leisure
It was decided as a reward for the leisure group
that some of them in preparation for their challenges in2011 they would have 5 days in Portugal. Club
secretary Charlie Dickson used his contact base and secured the use of a villa from a supporter of the
club. This meant that that Charlie, Anne Cummins, Chris Frew, Joan Trengove and Simon Dickson, all they
had to do was find a cheap flight and it was off to Albufeira in March.
The group secured use of bikes from a local supplier and enjoyed 3 days of adventure cycling and a couple of
days sightseeing. Their runs took in 40 miles from Albufeira to Vilamoura, 55 miles to Portimao and a scenic
trip to Faro.
These were all punctuated with stops for ice cream and coffee. This habit was formed with the Leisure groups
visiting Sketchers Coffee Shop in Bendooragh on their runs out at the weekends and through the week. This
relaxed theme that is carried on by BCC is what is appealing to the new members.
Everyone knows that the pace on a run out is of the slowest rider and everyone gets home safely and in one
piece.
Such was the success of this first venture that Charlie is already getting the use of two villas secured for
2012. This seems to be destined to run and run, with Ballymoney Cycling Club taking on more and more
commitments and promoting more events this year.
Tour of Glens and others.
The past couple of weekends saw Ballymoney Cycling Club riders taking part in the Portglenone Tour of the Lower
Bann, an event to raise funds for the Causeway Search and Rescue and the Tour of the Glens, In the Portglenone
event cyclists Charlie Dickson, Graeme Elliott, Shirley Park, Aoife Cameron Mitchell, Niall Carlin, Philip
McKeown, Liam Higgins, Ken, Anne Cummins and Trevor Wright. This was a tough 48 mile challenge that wandered
along the side of the River Bann down to Coleraine and back to Portglenone again. This was the first time that
some of the Ballymoney riders had tried this sort of distance. With the proceeds going to a good cause,
everyone enjoyed the challenge and are now gearing up for the Meningitis Research challenge from Portrush to
the Downings in Co. Donegal, Riders preparing for this run are Trefor,Ken Niall, Jack and Charlie, with Davy
and Dominic confirming their entries this week. This is a 96 mile cycle and will finish with a barbecue in
Donegal for the tired legs and hungry cyclists.
The Tour of the Glens was run this weekend and Ballymoney Cycling Club with Philip and Ken getting into the mix
in the Glens of Antrim. With some mechanicals the BCC riders enjoyed the event. Ken went on to complete the
100km route.
More plans for 2011
Later in the summer BCC Health and Leisure riders will be going from Ballymoney to Magilligan and crossing over
on the ferry to Greencastle, where a day in Innishowen is planned, with some fierce climbs to look forward to
at Petigoe and over to Malin Head, the Ballymoney group can have a go at the famous Mamore Gap, Last year 16
members of Ballymoney Cycling Club took part in the Tour of Innishowen and all of them completed the 100 mile
knee trembler.
The Bridges of Hope in August is expected to be a great success and with the support of the local community
there will be a 55 mile section this year tracing the River Bush from Stranocum to Altnahinch and back down to
the coast returning to a warm cup of tea and a few sandwiches at the Orange hall. The use of the Orange hall
was granted to the club last year and a big thank you to those who made this happen.
Coming Events.
Club Active and Leisure runs leave on a Saturday from Outdoor Life on Market Street in Ballymoney at 9.30am and
on a Sunday, 9.30am from Ballymoney Rugby Club, everyone is invited to come along. Charlie and Chris have
started their Monday and Thursday evening runs again leaving from Outdoor Life at 6.30pm.

10 mile Time Trial
This Thursday night the Dave Kane Time Trial League will be hosted by Ballymoney Cycling Club on the Portrush

help out. We need four marshal's at Ballybogey, 2-4 at the roundabout in Ballymoney and someone to help with
signing on. The event is expected to be open for entry from 5.30pm and the race starts at 7pm

Niall O’Hagan is tops for Ballymoney Cycling
Club
Three weekends have now seen Ballymoney Cycling Club rider’s mass
over fifteen top ten placings in races around Ireland. As the riders get fitter and the pace gets faster and
faster, BCC riders are showing that they are well able to keep up with and beat the best.
McAllister and
McKinney top 20 at the Wallace Caldwell Classic
Ballymena Road
Club every year promote this “Top Quality” road race over 78 gruelling miles from Galgorm to Maghera and then
over the mountain to Limavady, anyone who knows the main Limavady Coleraine Road will confirm it is a times not
even passable in a motor car.
Again this
year a full field of almost 80 riders scrambled for places and the honour to take part in what is widely known
as a part of Irish Cycling history. Ballymoney riders Stevie McAllister and Bryan McKinney were amongst the
field when it set off from Galgorm at a break neck pace, heading through Ahoghill to
Portglenone.
Break after
break attempts were launched off the front of the bunch as the field splintered into bits due to the constant
surge of speed, both Ballymoney CC pair were in the thick of the action. With the cream of Ulster in action, top
rider and eventual winner Adam Armstrong along with Conor McAllister, evergreen Johnny Dempsey, the Williams’s
brothers and Ballymoney favourite Philip Bremner opened a gap over the Cam and Springwell Mountain climbs. In
the run back through Coleraine, Kilrea and Portglenone the bunch regrouped and it looked set for a sprint out
for the lower places.
Fastest Race
Time ever recorded at the Wallace Caldwell 2011
The winning
time for 78 miles by the winner of the 2011 Wallace Caldwell Memorial, Adam Armstrong in a time of 2 hours 58
minutes saw a spectacular average speed of over 26mph. By leading in the bunch Stevie and Bryan from Ballymoney
Cycling Club equalled the time of the fastest winner up and to this year.

Niall
6th at the McCann Cup
In what was
seen by the diehard cycling followers at Tattyreagh Road outside Omagh on a bright and balmy Sunday as a “Real”
challenge for cyclists. The McCann Cup saw Niall O’Hagan from Ballymoney Cycling Club in fine form again. This
race was not for the faint hearted beginners with 50miles on the cards today. 5 laps of the Seskinore 10 mile
circuit. And the Loughguile man does what he does best and that is leading from the front. Keeping the field in
check and whenever possible attacking and getting away to victory. Along with competitors from Donegal,
Monaghan, the County Antrim man is never fazed by the illustrious company. Right from the gun it was off and
into the first of the five laps.
Coming into
the final lap, Niall was receiving encouragement from the small group of Ballymoney CC supporters at the
roadside, and then it was just a matter of waiting to see who would take the win. With motor horns and sirens
going the riders came into view. Despite being caught on the wheel of a rider who gave up and almost stopped,
Niall was able to secure an excellent 6th place. In the 70 mile A race Bryan McKinney and Steven
McAllister both after getting 2 top 20 finishes in the previous days Wallace Caldwell were in Seskinore to put
the final preparation to their Gorey 3day stage race plans. In what was a cat and mouse affair, and riders who
had not been in the 80 mile battle the day before made good their advantage and slipped away in a group of 10
riders. At the finish Bryan was 12th and Stevie was 18th. This race was won by Ross
Blayney from Bangor.
Great Times at
BCC 10 TT
The Portrush
line north of Ballybogey saw 22 riders face the timekeeper, Mrs Karen Crawford. On a night with a strange
tailwind finish and a tough leg to the roundabout at Ballymoney.
Winner on the
night was Ballymoney rider Jason Henry from Steven McAllister and David Barton ETCC
3rd.
Special
mention has to go to BCC riders Adrian Madden and Martin Carroll, both returning top class times of 25.29. It
looks like an exciting year of completion between some of these newcomers to the sport. New boy Wayne Stevens
again shows he has a bit of talent waiting to get out as he did 25.18. Missing from the night was last weeks 5
mile TT winner Bryan McKinney who travelled to the Bann Wheelers race and was first there in a time of
11.28
Irish
schoolboys Aaron Swan and Craig Crawford were top class performers getting times of 25.22 and 24.55
respectively. Aaron was the outright winner at Stamullen on Sunday when he won the Under 14 race. This makes up
for the disappointment of the previous week at Drogheda when his chain broke with a couple of miles to the
finish and possible victory.
